German Chocolate Walnut Cake Recipe

Ingredients

For the Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup hot water or brewed coffee

For the Coconut-Walnut Frosting:
  • 1 cup evaporated milk

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 3 egg yolks

  • ½ cup unsalted butter

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 ½ cups shredded coconut

  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

For the Chocolate Ganache (Optional but Recommended!):
  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped


Instructions

Step 1: Make the Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Add oil, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla. Mix until combined.

  4. Slowly stir in hot water or coffee until smooth.

  5. Divide the batter between the pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  6. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.


Step 2: Make the Coconut-Walnut Frosting

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter.

  2. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens (about 10–12 minutes).

  3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, shredded coconut, and walnuts. Let it cool completely before using.


Step 3: Make the Chocolate Ganache (Optional)

  1. Heat heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Pour over the chopped chocolate in a bowl.

  2. Let sit for 1 minute, then stir until smooth and glossy. Let it cool slightly before using.


Step 4: Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread half of the coconut-walnut frosting over it.

  2. Add the second cake layer and spread the remaining frosting on top.

  3. (Optional) Pour chocolate ganache over the top and let it drip down the sides.

  4. Let the cake set for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
